If summer had an official sound, it might just be the tinny melodies crackling through an ice cream truck’s speaker. After all, the occasional scoop is a hot weather must-have—just enjoy it in moderation!

But just two weeks after 40,000 cartons of ice cream were recalled, now more ice cream has reportedly been recalled due to potential contamination.

Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of 16,905 tubs of ice cream and frozen yogurt, affecting a total of 22 different products—in total, that’s 50,715 gallons. The report indicates, “Foreign material (plastic) may be present in ice cream product.”

The FDA report lists the recalling firm as Wells Enterprises, Inc., a Le Mars, IA-based company whose site says: “Wells is the largest privately held, family-owned ice cream and frozen treat manufacturer in the United States.” The tout their production for brands like Blue Bunny, Halo Top Creamery, Blue Ribbon Classics, and The Cheesecake Factory At Home.

The FDA’s report suggests that Wells Enterprises did not share a press release addressing the recall, which was apparently initiated on April 25.

All recalled products were reportedly sold in three-gallon tubs. Given that the largest ice cream container sold at grocery stores is typically 1.5 quarts, the unit size suggests that the products were shipped to restaurants, cafeterias, or other foodservice locations. This is supported by a few of the product names listed in the FDA report, including burger joint Johnny Rockets, smoothie franchise Planet Smoothie, and food distribution company Gordon Choice. The FDA notes that the recalled ice cream products were shipped to 103 distribution centers across the U.S.

The FDA has labeled the event as a Class II recall. The agency uses this classification for situations in which the “use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
