They’re manufactured by a “beloved” bakery and were sold in multiple locations, including a popular supermarket chain.

Bread Recalled in One U.S. State Over Safety Concerns

When the weather heats up, no one wants to turn on the oven—so cool, easy meals like a classic BLT are probably on the menu. Just grab a package of bacon, some fresh lettuce, ripe tomatoes (keep an eye on this recall), and, of course, bread.
But heads-up, sandwich enthusiasts, a new warning about two types of bread has come from a Northeastern state’s health and safety officials.
Yesterday, on May 7, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection Food, Standards and Product Safety Division (DCP) and the Department of Public Health alerted the public about a recall of International Bakery of Waterbury’s Portuguese Rolls and Old Fashion Italian Bread.
The recall was reportedly initiated due to the possibility of the products containing “undeclared soy allergens, which can cause serious illness for people who are allergic or sensitive to soy.”
Soybeans is one of the “Big 9” leading food allergies, as noted by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The bread products were packaged in clear bags that feature the International Bakery logo on the front. The DCP report does not state how many products were recalled; however, it did share the following details:
- 13-ounce (368 gram) packages of Portuguese Rolls, UPC 5713100401
- 22-ounce (624 gram) packages of Old Fashion Italian Bread, UPC 5713100400
As its name might suggest, International Bakery of Waterbury is based in Waterbury, Connecticut. According to its website, it’s a “beloved local institution” in the area that’s dedicated to “crafting fresh, delicious baked goods, sharing the warmth of family traditions through every loaf and pastry.” It sells bread products in its own retail store and wholesale to other businesses.
The recall is limited to Connecticut. Notably, the Portuguese rolls and Italian bread were sold at three Stop & Shop Supermarket locations, as well as Adam’s IGA and Watertown Meat Center.
According to the DCP report, these are the specific stores affected:
Stop & Shop Supermarket
- 410 Reidville Drive, Waterbury, CT 06705
- 240 Chase Avenue, Waterbury, CT 06705
- 727 Rubber Avenue, Naugatuck, CT 06779
Adam’s IGA
- 1167 Main Street, Watertown, CT 06795
Watertown Meat Center
- 485 Main Street, Watertown, CT 06795
The DCP report says that there have not been any reports of illnesses related to the recall.
Consumers with soy allergies should throw the bread products away or return them to International Bakery for a full refund, says the DCP. Details about the company’s location and contact information can be found in the DCP report.
