For dairy eaters, a low-sugar yogurt may be considered as one of the “perfect proteins” containing all nine essential amino acids—not to mention a great source of calcium and probiotics, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

However, yogurt fans in four states should be aware of a potential undeclared allergen.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Friday report announcing the recall of 113,676 Bonya yogurt parfait cups in four states: Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

For all 12 flavors impacted, the reason for the recall is listed as “undeclared almonds.” Almonds are a type of tree nut—one of the major food allergens in the United States. Tree nut allergy affects up to 1% of the population, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), which notes that tree nuts can cause “severe” reactions and even “life threatening anaphylaxis.”

Based on the FDA’s report, Knockroe Inc, based in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, appears to have first initiated the recall on March 29. The FDA’s report doesn’t seem to speak to whether expiration dates are active, but the “ongoing” status listed in the report suggests it’s possible they are.

Knockroe appears to be the company behind Bonya, which, according to its website, only sells yogurt parfait in a variety of flavors.

The recalled products were packaged in 8-ounce plastic cups with plastic inserts for granola. The FDA report provided a list of flavors affected and the number units recalled:

  • Bonya Strawberry Yogurt Parfait, 26,802 units
  • Bonya Vanilla Yogurt Parfait, 11,058 units
  • Bonya Blueberry Yogurt Parfait, 24,024 units
  • Bonya Mango Yogurt Parfait, 12,714 units
  • Bonya Peach Yogurt Parfait, 9,426 units
  • Bonya Lemon Yogurt Parfait, 1,596 units
  • Bonya Raspberry Yogurt Parfait, 6,984 units
  • Bonya Pineapple Yogurt Parfait, 3,912 units
  • Bonya Coconut Yogurt Parfait, 4,812 units
  • Bonya Passion Fruit Yogurt Parfait, 4,776 units
  • Bonya Strawberry-Banana Yogurt Parfait, 4,572 units
  • Bonya Black Cherry Yogurt Parfait, 3,000 units

Distributors can find pallet lot numbers and information about units per case in the FDA report.

The announcement does not state through which retailers the recalled Bonya products were sold. However, an online search suggests that Bonya products are sold at Foodtown and SuperFresh locations.

The FDA has labeled the recall as a Class I event. This is the FDA’s highest risk level reserved for situations in which there’s a “reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
