Critical new details on a recall issued earlier this month for a summery side sold at some of the nation’s best-known grocers.

Walmart’s Alert on a Popular Canned Food Recall Now Affects 50,000 Products and More New Details

Walmart made headlines over the weekend, as the Associated Press reported that shoppers of the retail giant could see an increase of prices as a result of ongoing tariff discussions—to which President Trump responded via social media, calling on the nation’s biggest retailer and supermarket chain to “eat the tariffs.”
Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has provided an important update for a canned goods recall we recently covered that Walmart announced last week on a baked bean brand sold there and at other popular grocers. Today more details have been released, with the agency saying the recall reason was: Undeclared allergen (soy) due to mislabeling. Product is labeled as Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans, but contains Beef and BBQ Baked Beans. The Beef and BBQ Baked Beans contain soy, which is not declared on the label.
In a Saturday report from the FDA was the update that a total of 54,180 cans of Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans have been recalled. (Previously, only the number of cases involved—4,515—had been announced. Earlier details also listed the states where shipments were reportedly affected: Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.)
Another new detail is that the event has officially been designated as Class I—reserved for only the most serious recalls. The FDA defines a Class I recall as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
On Walmart’s website, the company published a link to the FDA’s announcement. It also says the recalled product was sold at “all stores.” We previously reported that the baked beans also appeared to be sold by Meijer and Amazon, though it’s possible other retailers carried the product as well.
