By the time you reach for that ready-to-eat sandwich at a convenience store or cafeteria, you’re probably feeling pretty eager to take the edge off your hunger. Health-conscious Americans on the go might recognize that convenience food has come a long way over the years, with even some vending machines now offering options such as hummus and salads.

But late Sunday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted the public about a voluntary recall of 86 different ready-to-eat products—ranging from sandwiches to pasta—from Fresh & Ready Foods LLC in connection with an ongoing Listeria outbreak.

The FDA says the recalled products were sold under three different brand names:

Fresh & Ready Foods
City Point Market Fresh Food to Go
Fresh Take Crave Away

Though four states—Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington—have confirmed distribution, the FDA cautions that “product could have been distributed further, reaching additional states.” The FDA specifies that these products were distributed between April 18 and April 28, 2025, and sold at retailers and food service locations at such locations as in vending and breakroom areas within corporate offices, medical buildings and healthcare facilities, as well as “hospitals, hotels, convenience stores, airports, and airlines.”

Interestingly, the alert issued on Sunday, May 11 noted the recall has been issued due to a “possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes” while another report released on May 10 appears to confirm the outbreak link, saying: “The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to Ready-to-Eat (RTE) foods, or products that do not need additional cooking, produced by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC of San Fernando, CA.”

The Saturday report reveals both the FDA and the CDC began their investigation back in 2024, but didn’t find enough evidence for the outbreak source at that time. However, the investigation was reopened last month “after FDA investigators found Listeria in environmental samples collected from Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC during a routine surveillance inspection.”

From there, additional testing reportedly confirmed the particular Listeria strain found at Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC did indeed match the one causing illnesses.

As of Friday, May 9, a total of 10 people, all of whom were hospitalized, have been infected in two states (California and Nevada) in connection with the outbreak.

Additional information, such as product size, item numbers, “Use By” dates, and product photos are all provided at the above FDA links. Though some “Use By” dates are already passed, depending on the product, some are still current or extend to May 19.

Symptoms of a Listeria infection (also known as Listeriosis) can set in anywhere from the same day to 10 weeks after eating a contaminated food, though most symptoms begin within two weeks, according to the FDA. The agency provided a list of possible symptoms in their report.

The FDA says their investigation is ongoing, and they will provide more information “as it becomes available.”
